In preparing to paint with pastels I adapted the techniques of painting and drawing with oil paints and pencil. When I start a pastel portrait it is essential to get the composition, proportions, tones and colours right before getting into finer details. Looking at an animal face as closely as I do while working fills me with awe at the complexity and beauty of animals and nature.
